"Wilde's story is beautiful, and it is enhanced by the 28-minute CD of Goeller's music which accompanies actor Marvin Jarvis' expressive reading of the story. It is difficult to say with these matters, but Goeller's music could well become a children's classic. In any event, parents and small children will love this book in what is a highly competitive field."

"The reillustration of any classic fairy story is always cause for celebration. Yet it is rare to find a book take quite as much joy in the original text as artist Chris Beatrice has here. Playing with light and beauty, Beatrice brings Oscar Wilde’s original story to rip-roaring life. You can practically smell the thick perfumes of the flowers in this garden, or feel the warm spring breezes. Without a doubt, this is the best-illustrated version of this tale that I have ever seen. Period."

"Brilliant, charming, colorful, and comforting, Dan Goeller’s treatment of the Oscar Wilde classic is alive with adventure, humor, and a powerful lesson."

-Randy Edwards, Founder & Director of Programs for YouthCUE

"What makes this new book stand out...is the CD and the music. I would guess that this could easily become a real favourite with young children. If you’re looking for fairy tale entertainment, then The Selfish Giant is a good place to start."

-Ann Giles, Author of the Bookwitch Blog and Columnist for the Guardian

"This new multi-media presentation of Oscar Wilde’s classic fairy story brings its magic to life in a novel and invigorating way. Martin Jarvis’ dramatic presentation is buttressed by Dan Goeller’s exhilarating musical score and by the vivid splendor of Chris Beatrice’s full-colour illustrations. This is The Selfish Giant as it has never been seen or heard before, a veritable feast for the eyes and ears of children and adults alike."

-Joseph Pearce, Author of The Unmasking of Oscar Wilde

"The story is so beautifully set with music that is captivating."

-Joseph Mechavich, Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Kentucky Opera

"Complimented by enchanting artwork and an audio version complete with symphony orchestra, this classic fairy tale springs to life in an imaginative picture book adaptation, set to music that will inspire children of all ages for generations. The accompanying CD -- composed by Dan Goeller and performed by a symphony orchestra -- is what makes this version special."

"All together it is a nice package: art, literature and music. A great way to introduce your kids to all three. My kids enjoyed it and I am sure yours will too."

-Kevin Holtsberry, Author of the Collected Miscellany Blog

"Dan Goeller takes what is already a very touching story and renders it even more so with the expressive power of his music. The characters are clearly and colorfully delineated, his orchestrations are always crystal clear and his music is rhythmically and harmonically engaging. In the musical theme of the Giant himself, Goeller seems to be paying a reverential nod to that other great composer-storyteller–Prokofiev. This piece is a wonderful addition to the Family Concert repertoire and will be loved by both the young and the young at heart."

- Jeffrey Pollock, Conductor, Toledo Symphony Orchestra

"Dan Goeller’s book/musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant is a magical adventure for a child to experience. Chris Beatrice’s illustrations bring to life the narration by Martin Jarvis, but ultimately it is Goeller’s music that becomes the magical carpet ride which sets the emotional tone for the characters. His orchestration of the music and utilization of specific instruments, such as the tuba for the giant, to interpret the story combine to tell the story as a complete sensual experience. This book with an accompanying CD is so far beyond the traditional “read along” book that there should be a new category to describe it. While others are working on what the category should be, librarians shouldn’t wait, but should add this to their collection immediately. Watching the faces of your patrons, both adults and children, as they listen and read along will be reward enough to those who purchase Goeller’s book/CD."

-Bettye Fowler Kerns, Associate Director for Youth Services and Head of Main Library Central Arkansas Library System

"I really enjoyed my first reading of The Selfish Giant. My enjoyment increased hugely upon listening to Dan Goeller’s imaginative and beautifully orchestrated musical setting. As with all great musical settings of words and images, Mr. Goeller’s music gives wings to the story"

-Keith Lockhart, Conductor, Boston Pops Orchestra

"Oscar Wilde's story cries out for musical treatment on every page; Dan Goeller's version proves to be solidly crafted and musically fulfilling. While totally appropriate for children, adults who listen along will find themselves in the presence of a born musical storyteller. The score is cinematic in its vividly pictorial qualities. "

-Glenn Winters, Community Outreach Musical Director for the Virginia Opera

"Dan Goeller's score for The Selfish Giant is uplifting, exciting and mesmerising. With his imaginative orchestration and unique musical voice he gets straight to the heart of Wilde's text. Coupled with Martin Jarvis's captivating reading, this is a very special recording."

-Lucy Parham, International Concert Pianist

"The book is beautiful. The illustrations are lush and vivid. The music captures the emotions of the story which "pauses" for musical interludes on the CD. I think the book and music would be an excellent tool for teaching music interpretation and appreciation to young children. Teachers or parents may initiate discussions of how the music fits with the varying emotional moments of the story. There are many possibilities here."

-Heidi Anne Heiner, author of the SurLaLune Fairy Tales Blog

"Dan Goeller's Selfish Giant is a well-drawn symphonic picture. The orchestra brings Oscar Wilde's story to life with themes that musically illustrate the characters and moods, perfectly complimenting the lushness of Chris Beatrice's artwork. Enjoyable and educational, it provides a window into both this wonderful story and the world of the orchestra for listeners young and old."

-Maestro Delta David Gier, Music Director, South Dakota Symphony

"Here is a celebration of wonder and love. Goeller's music is a perfect complement to Wilde's story and Beatrice's paintings. I'm thrilled to see this classic story gain new life in such a beautiful way. Everything about this sings."

-author of Newbery Honor and National Book Award finalist, THE UNDERNEATH

"This magnificent, classic tale of the Selfish Giant has once again come to life in this smashing reenactment. This is undoubtedly one of the best all around remolded fairy tales I’ve read in some time. The tale is still told in Oscar Wilde’s words, but they are magnified and enhanced by not only the artwork, but also an orchestral accompaniment. When I first saw the illustrations and listened to some of the tracks on the CD it was simply awe inspiring. The narrator, Martin Jarvis, brings excitement to the tale in a Disneyish, Broadway manner only he can do. The dark, serious illustration of the Giant returning home to his castle immediately brought to mind the illustrations of N. C. Wyeth. Wilde’s original tale, which can be read on many online sources, carries with it religious overtones. This is a sizzling,~hot~, fairy tale that will undoubtedly become a classic unto itself!"

-Deb Fowler, Reviewer for the Feathered Quill Book Review

"I’m a music lover and I found the music to be perfectly matched to the tone of the book. The included cd is narrated with the resounding and pleasant voice of Martin Jarvis. The illustrations in the book are truly beautiful and thoughtfully done. Parents, this is a must have and not just for little ones. Like I said, mine is 10 and it held his attention for 30 minutes. Well done."

-Jillian Wolf, Author of Blueshelled.com Blog

"The Selfish Giant is a musical, artistic and literary tour de force. Dan Goeller has created a stunning work that summons just the right musical tension and release with his compelling orchestrations. I can’t think of any age group who would not be thoroughly enthralled with the confluence of these three artistic expressions in the telling of this story"
